  • Why we need to mobilize against deep-sea bottom trawling: Claire Nouvian at TEDxAUCollege

Europe is currently discussing the fate of the deep ocean in the North East Atlantic. The European Commission has proposed to ban what scientists describe as the most destructive fishing gear in history, deep-sea bottom trawling, a heavily subsidized, fuel-intensive fishing method that destroys fragile millenary corals that live in the dark depths of the ocean. But industrial fishing lobbies from France and Spain have launched a war on European institutions to defeat the will of citizens and scientists in order to protect their short-term interests. With a petition signed by over 835,000 people, the non-profit organization BLOOM, founded by Claire Nouvian, is at the forefront of a battle against absurd economic and ecological models of exploitation. To find out a bit more about underwater mining, Resource Investing News had a chat with Mike Johnston, CEO of Nautilus, at the 2015 PDAC conference in Toronto. In the interview below, Johnston discusses what makes Solwara 1 so high grade, and speaks to questions about the environmental impacts of underwater mining. He also speaks about New Zealand's recent rejection of underwater mining projects, and about Nautilus's partnership with the Papua New Guinean government. We're depleting many of our land-based stores of minerals, and remote though it is, the bottom of the ocean is a likelier source of precious minerals than asteroids. Since no one has tried mining the seafloor yet, much remains uncertain about how it will work — or how much it will disturb the creatures that make their homes at the bottom of the ocean. http://www.nbcnews.com/mach/innovation/these-fearsome-robots-will-bring-mining-deep-ocean-n724901?cid=public-rss_20170227 http://www.wochit.com This video was produced by YT Wochit News using http://wochit.com

Easy to deploy from any kind of platform, the user friendly command and control software offers auto piloting functions to improve mission efficiency. It is battery operated with 3h endurance, can operate up to 300m and in up to 3 knot currents without the limitations of traditional ROVs with an umbilical. The system features automated launch, recovery and recharging from an USV. Acting as a communication gateway with AUVs, The USV also, allows data to be ex-filtrated and relayed to a remote Command and Control Center at safe standoff range. This data is analyzed and the list of MILCOs is produced, which is then used to plan the SeaScan missions. Learn more: http://www.ecagroup.com/en/solutions/Seascan-MK2

To be sure, Nautilus Minerals (TSX:NUS) is one of the more interesting mining companies out there. It's project, Solwara 1, lies on the sea floor near Papua New Guinea, where the company is hoping to mine high grade copper and gold deposits. Overall, it was interesting to get some insight into the world of underwater mining and how Nautilus intends for its project to work.

We're depleting many of our land-based stores of minerals, and remote though it is, the bottom of the ocean is a likelier source of precious minerals than asteroids. It is strewn with deposits rich in gold, copper, manganese, cobalt, and other resources that supply our electronics, green technology, and other vital tools like medical imaging machines.

Seeking change, Charles applies a variety of concepts and lenses to inform on-ground action. He is confident that there must be a better way for extractive industries to honour the interrelatedness of people and place, and become temporary but valuable suppliers of means - serving and subservient to the common good. Charles is the Executive Director of the Mineral Policy Institute, a civil society group focusing on the impacts of extractive industries. Charles’ interest and PhD research is centred on the seemingly inevitable conflict and sub-optimum outcomes that arise from industrial mining. He has a special focus on mining legacies in Australia, terrestrial mining in Papua New Guinea and deep sea mining in the Pacific. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
